RYA First Aid (1 Day)

The right knowledge, at the right time, can save a life — especially at sea.

 

In a medical emergency, immediate and knowledgeable action can save lives, especially in remote maritime environments.

This one-day course covers all the key first aid topics tailored for boating enthusiasts and professionals— making it highly relevant for anyone who goes afloat, whether you’re navigating inland waterways, coastal routes, or crossing the Channel.

You’ll learn how to respond confidently and effectively in medical emergencies, even in remote locations where help may be delayed. The course includes Category C drug training, making it suitable for those working toward commercial endorsements.

 

 

Course highlights:

 

CPR, drowning protocols and recovery position in confined spaces

Cold water shock, seasickness, and hypothermia treatment

Emergency communication (including VHF Mayday procedures)

Casualty care until help arrives — including helicopter evacuations

 

This is an MCA-approved syllabus and meets the requirements for RYA Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence and some commercial work afloat.

 

Taught in a relaxed, practical setting by experienced professionals, this course equips you with the first aid skills every skipper or crew member should have.

Course Summary

This course fulfils the requirements for:
  • First aid training for vessels working up to area Category 2 under the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Codes of Practice for Small Vessels Operated Commercially;
  • First aid training needed by offshore racers subject to World Sailing’s Offshore Special Regulation OSR 6.05.2;
  • The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations, 1981 for the purposes of Emergency First Aid at Work.
The subjects specific to boating include:
  • The recovery position in a confined space
  • CPR, including the drowning protocol
  • Cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure
  • Seasickness and dehydration
  • Medical assistance or advice by VHF
  • Helicopter rescue
